Bryan Acheampong to Interior Ministry is to rig 2020 polls – General Mosquito

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia alleges that the reassignment of the Minister of State at the Ministry of National Security, Bryan Acheampong, to the Ministry of Interior caps the “orchestration” by the Akufo-Addo-led government to rig the December elections.

Mr Acheampong, who is also Member of Parliament for Abetifi Constituency, was reassigned to the Interior Ministry as Minister of State on Thursday via a statement issued by the presidency.

No reasons were given for the reshuffle, which also saw the Deputy Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, move to the National Security in the same capacity.

Most believe the reassignment of Mr Acheampong in particular is an indirect implementation of the Emile Short Commission of Inquiry, which looked into the disturbances of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election of January 31, 2019.

But speaking to journalists on Thursday, Mr Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito, said the decision by the president is “a slap in the face of the Emile Short Commission”.

“And I believe it is a cork in the whole orchestration to rig the elections.”

Mr Asiedu Nketia justified his assertion by explaining that Mr Acheampong led “thugs” to cause mayhem at the by-election and he was fingered by the Commission’s report as one of the government officials who deserved sanction.

“And so now what President Akufo-Adoo has done is to tell the Emile Short Commission to go to hell,” the NDC General Secretary said.

He said by the president’s action the Abetifi MP’s actions have been legitimized.

“[It will] give him the legitimate authority now to deploy the thugs they have trained and embedded in the [Ghana] Police Service to now go and be deployed for election security.”
